Running for election – why?
I do not believe in election promises. I am not promising you that there will be a streetlight on this corner or a school in that area. I think that in municipal elections people should elect candidates whose values are in the driver's seat when decisions are made.
What I can promise you, is to work my butt off to realize these two values:
1. Everyone should have a chance to succeed.
2. We will not ruin the planet or the welfare of future generations.
What do these mean in practice?
Many things, but for example:
Education, child protection, and youth services are not just expenditures. Through them, we create hope for children and teenagers. This city cannot bring up kids who have nothing to lose. These services should never be the first things on the cutting list.
The decisions made in the city council of Helsinki and in the public utilities (owned by Helsinki) can have a huge effect on the emissions. Not only in Helsinki but also in the Helsinki metropolitan area and even in the whole country. So, I think we need more ambition with this one. For example, we should invest more in public transport.
There must be a balance between income and expenditures. In general, the finances of the city should lie on strong fundaments. We cannot spend money in a way that leads to an increase in taxation. Working and being an entrepreneur in Helsinki must always be worthwhile.
Businesses create jobs and bring tax revenues. And I think Helsinki should be the best place in Finland to start a business. I know it sounds like a cliché, but still. This has an even increased meaning after COVID-19 pandemic because last year has been catastrophic.
